You are now on the site of the Cukerman’s Gate Foundation, founded on March 10th, 2009 in Będzin, Poland. Until then we were a socially active group known as Cukerman’s Gate Initiative. The Foundation came appeared to use creatively the potential of Będzin inhabitants as well as the town’s touristic values. Our priority is to look after and promote an old Jewish House of Prayer, which is also the foundation’s seat.

The House of Prayer is a part of a tenement house complex known to Będzin inhabitants as the Cukerman’s Gate, after the house’s pre-war owner Nuchim Cukerman.

In the House there have survived polychromies carrying motives characteristic to judaism (used also as the recurring graphical motif of this website).

The Cukermans’ House of Prayer is the starting point for each of our projects, inspiration for further development and activity, as well as the foundation’s seat.

The main aims of our activity are:
*care and protection of the town’s monuments, including renovation of polichromies located at Aleja Kołłątaja 24/28, known as the Former Cukerman’s House of Prayer
*developing the Former Cukerman’s House of Prayer into a memorial
*connecting the protection of cultural heritage with local community development
*activity in fields of tourism, culture and education
*inciting tolerance and understanding between nations and European integration

We engage the town’s inhabitants in realization of our projects. Thus far we have realized the project Manufacture Warehouse, aimed at placing plates reminding of pre-war companies on buildings that were their locations. Presently we are working on the project History Witnesses, which is to gather from Będzin people and publish information / memories / artifacts / documents / photographs / press-cuttings, that is traces of history.

Using the potential of the town and its inhabitants, as well as the Jewish heritage, we remind of once multicultural character of Będzin. We want to drag everyone around us into creative work which will result in boosting the touristic and cultural value of Będzin, its region...
