Member of Polish Legions in World War I from Będzin
As early as 1. August 1914 he joined the Legions as a member of Reconnaissance Company. He was heavily wounded and spent winter in a hospital. From next August he fought again with the 1. Brigade of the Legions, among others in the battle of Stochod in Polesie (4. June – 20.September 1916). As an Austrian citizen he was enlisted in the Austrian army and sent to serve on the Italian front where he became prisoner of war. After returning to Poland in 1918 he joined Polish Army where he served until 1921. He was awarded with bronze Austrian Cross and Polish Independence Cross.
